How I prepare for podcast interviews (pre, during and post interview)

I’ve been interviewed for 7 podcasts to date. I’ve found it a great way to enhance my public speaking skills and confidence related to this. Each time I’ve been interviewed I’ve learned something new about the process and have utilised the learnings to the next opportunity.

Here is what I’ve learned so far and how I prep for different stages of the process. I’ve broken it up into stages – pre, during and post interview.

Pre podcast interview

Listen to some podcast episodes of the prospective podcast: Prior to accepting/agreeing to chat on a podcast I’ll have a listen to a few podcast episodes to get a feel of the interviewer, their style and also the average length of the episode.

You can also ask the person/organisation if there are any specific episodes they’d recommend you listen to — they may have different styles/structures throughout a season or it can depend on the type of interviewee. It has also been a good way for me to double check that I’m comfortable with how they approach podcasting and the topics and themes they tend to cover.

Chat to the interviewer and/or producer prior to the podcast recording: This chat should cover the episode structure and a brief outline and direction of the proposed…
